Famous last words…(Continued from issue 9)
Let’s see, where was I?
Oh yeah, 3 stressful issues after seeing those 2 lines on that pregnancy test. 4 months into the pregnancy, now free to start telling others about our news.
5 months pregnant, my belly was growing, the baby started moving, and hubby could feel the baby move now.
6 months pregnant, and morning sickness was subsiding, but numbness started happening in my feet. This felt similar to when I became paraplegic, or was it?
The neurologist told me after my vertigo was gone due to having that 3.5-hour MRI done that if my young husband and I were trying to get pregnant, now would be a good time.
The neurologist told me that if I did have Multiple Sclerosis according to all the current medical textbooks (back in 1999), it would be like MS never existed for me IF it is something that I have.
The odd thing about MS is that there is no test to determine if one has MS or not (even in 2025). All these years of research and there still is no cause determined. All the money that has been raised through Walk-a-thons and Bike-a-thons plus other donations and there still are questions as to the cause. Is it genetic? Is it viral? No one knows.
When the neurologist told me that according to the medical textbooks, MS would not exist for me. I took a leap of faith and had a conversation with my husband that resulted in us deciding to TRY to get pregnant. We got pregnant on our first “TRY”!
Now, six months into pregnancy, morning sickness is subsiding, the baby is kicking a lot, and its heartbeat is strong. My Smile gets bigger every day as this journey of pregnancy gets closer to the time when we will finally meet our precious baby. Until…
A lot of women during pregnancy experience weight gain and swollen ankles. My weight gain was steady. My ankles were normal size. But this numbing sensation in my feet didn’t seem right. I called the neurologist who told me now would be a good time to try to get pregnant to let him know what was going on. I remember it was a Friday late morning when I called his office. His response was to get rest over the weekend and call him again on Monday morning if there was any change.
I spent the weekend wondering what my body was doing. I was making a baby on the inside but on the outside, I was not comfortable.
Did you ever experience pins and needles in your feet because you sat funny and it caused the blood flow it stop and now it is returning?
Imagine that feeling never stopping and now traveling up your legs. That’s how my weekend went PLUS the tinkling turned to numbness which turned into a lack of control of first my feet and then ultimately my legs from the waist down.
Picture a pregnant woman unable to walk across the room to get to a bathroom. I was not a happy pregnant lady by the time Monday came. The time finally came when I was able to call the doctor’s office on Monday morning. I was ready to tell him how bad my weekend was. He told me on the phone that according to the textbooks I should not be experiencing this. He told me to come into his office. I was brought there except I needed to be carried into his first-floor office.
When the doctor saw how I was being brought into his office, he told my husband to turn around and go straight to the hospital. He would meet us there with the OBGYNs because now there was another life to be concerned about.
NOW we need to be concerned about the other life! I was concerned about the other life when I first saw those 2 blue lines on that pregnancy test.
What more could stress me out more than to have to go to a hospital before my due date?
Back to that in the next newsletter…
